A Lake View, oil painting on canvas
unframed, painted 2007. This is from the
series I am working on called Meditative
Pieces. Back in 2006, I photographed Lake
Michigan at Holland and Grand Haven.
These Meditative oil paintings are for just
that, meditating, reflection and offering
peace to the viewer. May they transport
the viewers to a better, calmer place than
that in which they find themselves.
Waves Rolling or (Financial Distress) oil on
unframed canvas stretcher frame, July 2007
painted. As I began to realize
unemployment was coming to an end and
yet I still did not have a job, though I'd sent
out many resumes, I was very discouraged
and took it out on canvas by painting this.
The sky is dark blue, hinting at a coming
storm, the waves are growing in intensity
and match the darkening sky. Why do I
share these things because I want you to
know the artist behind these paintings. I am
real, I am human. I struggle. Plus, by telling
the story of these paintings it makes them
more real and inviting to the viewer and
buyers (I hope). This one is also from the
Meditative series.
Coming Storm Photograph taken 2006
I love how angry and full of expectancy these clouds are.
USS Wall Street 24x28 oil on canvas About Wall
Street's failures. Completed November 2008
Saint Sebastian, oil on canvas
board. Started and finished Sept. 1,
2007. This was a self-portrait (my
first attempt) gone amiss. As I
painted, I saw the face of a man
emerge. When I wiped paint from
around his head, a halo appeared.
The name St. Sebastian came to
mind and kept coming to mind as I
continued to paint. After painting
the portrait, having not yet added
the arrows. I checked on the
Internet to see if there actually
was a St. Sebastian and was
surprised at what I found. He had
been a Christian in the Roman
army. When this was found out, he
was sentenced to die by being shot
with arrows. But he did not die.
After adding the three arrows, I sat
with brush in hand, studying this
portrait. I wondered why Saint
Sebastian of all names. Why not
someone else. Then a thought
came to me. He had withstood the
arrows of his enemies. I was in the
midst of a financial crisis that could
shake my faith, if I let it. I realized
that this truly was a self-portrait
after all, that the Lord was
speaking to me through it. That he
was with me in the midst of this
"fiery dart" crisis I am in and he will
bring me through.
What I find interesting about this
painting is that St. Sebastian's
image is muted as if he is a thought
coming through on the canvas. The
arrows are bold and immediate--as
if they are the most important
aspect of this painting. They are
not, but the pain of the situation I
am in seems very immediate, like
the arrows.
These 3 oil pastels are my
most recent work.  They
were born from my desire
to attempt to recreate
works by Mark Rothko
--an artist whose work I
admire. I am very pleased
with how these paintings
turned out. The only
similarity with Rothko's
work is the shape of the
squares. The rest is all me.

The abstract art as well as photographs on this page are available for sale.

"While the Cake Baked" (I created this oil pastel). This is one of my favorite
oil pastels to date because of the title and the subject matter. I really was
baking a cake at the time of painting. The cake was yummy, but the
painting--even better.
"Red" oil pastel. Painted Sept. 29 and completed within about
15 minutes at 5:58 p.m. Love the progression of my work. The
little landscape is remembering my visit to New Mexico.
